Creepy (But Fun!) Classroom Management Tricks That Actually Work

Bring the Halloween spirit into your classroom with five spooky (but teacher-tested!) management tricks that keep kids engaged and behavior on track.

Creepy (But Fun!) Classroom Management Tricks That Actually Work

October is the perfect time to mix a little spooky fun into your classroom while keeping students motivated and behavior on track. Kids are already buzzing about costumes, candy, and fall fun—why not channel that energy into something positive? These Halloween-themed classroom management tricks are simple to set up, easy to maintain, and guaranteed to bring smiles to your students’ faces (without bringing chaos to your classroom).

Here are five creepy (but fun!) behavior hacks you can use all month long:

1. Ghost Bucket Anchor Chart

Grab a poster board, draw a cartoon-style ghost holding a trick-or-treat bucket, and let your students do the rest! Each time the class—or an individual student—meets expectations, add a “candy” to the ghost’s bucket (stickers, paper cutouts, or even drawn-in tally marks). Once the bucket is full, the whole class earns a special reward.

Reward Ideas: Extra recess, free time, bag of chips, homework passes, or even a mini dance party.

2. You’ve Been Booed Bags

Surprise your students with “You’ve Been Booed” bags. While your class is at recess, lunch, or specials, secretly leave a small bag of goodies on a student’s desk who’s been meeting the day’s expectations.

What to include: Candy, pencils, erasers, stickers, homework passes, dress-down passes, or a small snack.

Students love the element of surprise, and it creates positive buzz in your classroom when they see their classmates recognized.

3. Monster Points

Turn classroom management into a game! Create a bulletin board with little monster cutouts for each student or group. Every time they show positive behavior, they earn a “monster point” (stickers, tally marks, or even Velcro pieces that look like food to “feed” their monster).

At the end of the week, reward the students or groups with the most points. For added fun, give the whole class a collective goal too—once the monsters are “full,” everyone celebrates together.

4. Ghost Passes

Give out ghost-shaped passes as a special behavior incentive. Students can collect them and trade them in for privileges like:

  • Sitting in the teacher’s chair

  • Being line leader for the day

  • Skipping one homework assignment

  • Choosing the class brain break

The passes are easy to make, and kids love getting to “cash them in.”

5. Wicked Wheel of Rewards

Add some extra suspense with a Halloween-themed prize wheel. Decorate it with pumpkins, bats, or spider webs, and fill the spaces with rewards both big and small.

Ideas for the wheel: Dance party, candy treat, sit by a friend, free drawing time, wear a hat for the day, or class game time.

Every time the class reaches a behavior milestone, they get to spin the wheel. The anticipation makes it even more exciting!

Final Thoughts

Classroom management doesn’t have to be scary—unless you want it to be (in the best way). By adding seasonal, playful twists to your routines, you keep students motivated and engaged during one of the most exciting months of the year.

Try one—or all—of these Halloween-themed tricks in your classroom this October and watch how quickly your students buy in. After all, when learning feels like a treat, everyone wins!
