Virginia is one of only a handful of states that has never adopted the Common Core State Standards. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) maintains its own comprehensive Standards of Learning (SOL) framework, which governs instruction and assessment in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History and Social Sciences, and other subject areas for all public school students in grades kindergarten through 12. Virginia’s SOLs are identified by subject-specific codes, and teachers are expected to reference these codes explicitly in lesson plans that are reviewed during classroom observations.
