The state’s academic standards — formally known as the Arizona Academic Standards, and sometimes referenced as the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS) — govern curriculum and instruction across all subject areas from kindergarten through grade 12. Arizona adopted its own distinct versions of ELA and Mathematics standards in 2016, aligning to college and career readiness expectations while departing from the federal Common Core branding. The primary statewide assessment aligned to these standards is the Arizona’s Academic Standards Assessment (AASA), which evaluates student proficiency in English Language Arts and Mathematics for students in grades 3 through 8. The AASA replaced the AzM2 (Arizona’s Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching) and AzMERIT assessments; while “AzM2” remains a term in widespread colloquial use, the AASA is the current official program name. Arizona also administers the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) to determine ELL student placement and monitor annual language development progress.

Arizona teachers face a compliance requirement unique among the fifty states: under Arizona Revised Statutes §15-756.01, all students identified as English Language Learners must receive structured English immersion (SEI) instruction for a minimum of 120 minutes per day in grades K–5 and 100 minutes per day in grades 6–12.
